There are several different ways of displaying an image on a coin, and the one that's right for you will depend largely on the kind of image you start with. If your artwork is a drawing with lots of color, then you will probably want to use soft enamel or imitation hard enamel to reproduce the image on your coin.

If you are starting with a photo and don't want to lose detail or color, then you may want to consider using a photo inlay, like this one.

If you have a photo or a drawing with lots of detail, or you want the image to have more definition, try using a 3D design like this.

If you are looking for texture and color, try transparent hard or soft enamel with granulating underneath.
